More importantly, it gives Raimi a chance to explore what an object like that would do to someone. It also facilitates Wanda's possession of her variants, which matches the powers of Evil Dead's tome too closely to dismiss. The Multiverse of Madness does the same thing with the Darkhold and its opposite, the Book of the Vishanti, keeping it out of Wanda's hands as much as Strange's and forcing them both to scramble for the prize, which helps keep its kaleidoscope of disparate elements focused and on track. The Evil Dead films conveniently put the Necronomicon out of reach once the demons arrived, making it all the more difficult to set things right. In the most basic terms, it's a MacGuffin of the same kind as the earlier movies.
